Fred Perry

Fred Perry is one of the most enduring and timeless logos in the world and is associated with authenticity, heritage and integrity. Although this very nearly wasn’t the case if Mr Perry had had his say in the matter. The first logo Fred considered was actually a pipe. Him being a pipe smoker he thought this was a great idea but fortunately his Austrian business partner Tibby Wegner managed to dissuade him as he didn’t think that the girls would go with it and we have to concur.

The Fred Perry shirt became the first crossover brand from sportswear to street wear. It started a long-term relationship between British youth culture and a sportswear brand. As British street fashion and music influenced the rest of the world, the Fred Perry shirt was noticed, adopted and worn in numerous countries around the globe. One thing remains constant. The original slim fit cotton piquet shirt is still made in England to the same shape, using the same fabric as it was when the Fred Perry shirt was first launched, way back in 1952.

In fact it became so successful that even The Queen Mother once asked Fred why his shirt was better than anyone else’s to which he replied, “Ma’am, it’s the shirt that fits”, which in fact was the company’s ad line of the day.

Fashions may come and go, but style is timeless. Consider the following statement made by Britain’s most successful tennis player in the final years of his life. “Being a realistic man; he wrote “I have never worried about admitting that my name is better known worldwide, not for winning Wimbledon three times, but because of Fred Perry shirts and sportswear.”
